Prominent Russian scientist, Associate Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a great authority in the field of high-speed air and gas dynamics and experimental methods of gas flow investigation.

Aleksandr Shiplyuk was born on September 8, 1966 in Barabinsk, Novosibirsk region. Upon graduation from the Barabinsk high school No. 93 he studied in Novosibirsk Electrotechnical university (today Novosibirsk State Technical university), the Aircraft Engineering department; his major was air- and hydrodynamics.

From 1990 till now he is employed by the Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Siberian Branch of RAS (ITAM SB RAS); he began as an intern researcher and then progressed as a junior researcher, researcher, senior researcher, Head of laboratory, Deputy Director for science. In 2015 he was  elected the Director of the Institute.

The major fields of the A.N. Shiplyuk scientific activities are related with the development of the experimental facilities and methods of aerophysical researchers, analysis of wave processes causing the laminar flow transition into the turbulent one, methods of control of these processes at hypersonic flight speeds, experimental aero-thermodynamics of hypersonic aircrafts with scramjets.

In 1998 Aleksandr Shiplyuk became the PhD of physics and mathematics; in 2005 he became the post-Doc, in 2011 he was elected the Associate Member of RAS, the Department of power engineering, machinery, mechanics and control processes of RAS, the specialty “Machinery”.

Aleksandr Shiplyuk is a member of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch RAS, the Department of power engineering, machinery, mechanics and control processes RAS, Associate of Scientific Council of SB RAS in the power engineering, machinery, mechanics and control processes, editorial board of the journal “Thermophysics & Aeromechanics”, Russian National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Deputy Chairman of the Dissertation Council Д003.035.02 in ITAM SB RAS, the Chairman of the Scientific Council in ITAM SB RAS.

Major scientific achievements of A.N. Shiplyuk:

  • Serious contribution in the modernization and creation of unique test benches and facilities providing in on-earth tests the conditions approaching to full-scale ones;
  • Development of the methods of modernization of wave processes in hypersonic shear flows;
  • Discovery of the nonlinear mechanisms of the laminar-turbulent transition in hypersonic boundary layers;
  • Experimental discovery and vindication of the new method of stabilization of  hypersonic boundary layers with the aid of coatings with a porous ultrasonic-absorbing microstructure;
  • A new type of the hot-wire anemometer with a sensitive element shaped as a semi-conductor monocrystal micro- or nanotube has been created on the base of nanotechnology.

Shiplyuk A.N. received the award of Academician V.V. Struminskij for the works in the field of aerodynamics for young scientists; he won the competition of young scientists of the Novosibirsk Scientific Center of SB RAS devoted to the 275th Anniversary of RAS.

Since 2007, Shiplyuk A.N. intensively participates in educational activities in the Novosibirsk State Technical university, gives an academic-year course of lectures “The methods of aerophysical experiments”, half-academic-year courses “The optimization methods in ballistics and aerodynamics tasks” and “Modern challenges in ballistics and hydro-aerodynamics”, supervises graduations works of students and PhD students; one of his disciples became a PhD.

Shiplyuk A.N. is a successful Head of the lab “Hypersonic technologies” with unique hypersonic  wind tunnels purposed to investigate fundamental and applied problems of the hypersonic flight. In recent years, Shiplyuk A.N. coordinates the researches in ITAM SB RAS for the wide range of  fundamental and applied problems related with hypersonic flows; the general target is the creation of promising hypersonic rocket systems; the researches are carried out for the leaders in rocket-and-space developers in Russia.
