Vasily Fomin was born on November 5, 1940 in Krasnodar. He graduated Kazan State university (1963), PhD course under the supervision of Prof. G.G. Tumashev (1966). He worked as assistant  in KSU Dept. (1966 – 1970). Since 1970 V. Fomin has been working in the Siberian Branch: senior researcher of the Computing Center of SB AS USSR (1973 – 1976); senior researcher (1970 – 1973), Head of the laboratory of fast processes, Head of the Dept. of gas dynamics of multi-phase systems (1976 – 1979), Deputy Director (1979 – 1989), acting Director (1989), Director (from 1990 to 2015) Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics SB AS USSR, now Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics SB RAS. The member of the Presidium Siberian Branch of RAS (from 1997). The Chief Academic Secretary of SB RAS (from 1997 to 2008). Since 2008, Academician V.M. Fomin is a Deputy Chairman of SB RAS. Since 2015, Academician V.M. Fomin is an Academic director of the Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics SB RAS.

As a Head of the Department of Aerophysics and Gas Dynamics in Novosibirsk State university (from 2001), Professor of Air and Hydrodynamics Dept. in Novosibirsk State Technical university (from 1987), V. M. Fomin makes the great contribution in the preparation of the academic staff. As a member of several dissertation councils, he participates in the preparation of the high-skilled academic personnel.

V.M. Fomin is a prominent mechanician. He is a founder of the scientific school on the simulation of shock-wave processes in multi-component and heterogeneous media. He developed the theory of the combined fracture and shock  waves in the media like gas and solid particles mixture; the method of the differential analyzer of shock waves; the impulse mechanism of body rupture at high loading velocities; the method of cascade shell tossing; the methods of body drag reduction in supersonic gas flows by means of action of particles, thin jets of fluid or glowing electric discharge on the heading shock wave. Together with his disciples he created the unique complex of physical and mathematical models, numerical methods and complex programs for computation of multivariate non-stationary problems of gas dynamics, deformed solid body and multi-phase media which were implemented in industry-based researching centers and design bureaus of  mechanical-engineering institutions. For this block of works V.M. Fomin received the National Award and the Prize of the USSR Cabinet.

Under the direct supervision of V.M. Fomin and with his assistance, gas-dynamic multi-functional friction machines and automated laser-technological complexes were created; they are successfully operated in Russian factories.

He pursues intensive academic and organization activities as a member of the National Committee of the Russian Federation on theoretical and applied mechanics, Bureau of the Scientific Council RAS for the problems “Thermal regimes of machines and devices”, Coordination Council on engineering sciences in RAS, expert board of the Russian Higher Attestation Commission, other academic councils and committees. He is a member of editorial boards of the journals “Thermophysics & Aeromechanics”, “Applied Mechanics and Theoretical Physics”, “Physical Mesomechanics” SB RAS; V.M. Fomin is an editor in the serial review “Simulation in Mechanics”, and a number of other scientific publications.

V.M. Fomin is the laureate of the USSR National Award (1981), the Prize of the USSR Cabinet (1990). He is awarded with the Order of Honour (2001), Chinese Order of Friendship (2004), second-class medal of the Order of Merit for the Motherland (2008).
